4 Advantages of a True Hardwood Floor

Many of us have heard it for years…” hardwood floors are the way to go!”, but it isn’t often someone explains why this is the case. There are many reasons to go with a hardwood floor, but today we are going to breakdown what we feel are the top 4.

  1. High-quality look

There is just something about the look of a hardwood floor, isn’t there? Though there are many floors out there that “mimic” the look of hardwood, none offer the actual look and feel of what hardwood brings to a room as it has a timeless beauty that can’t be duplicated.   It is almost something that can’t even be put into words, but when a room has hardwood it just feels different…richer…homier & warmer.

  1. Easy to clean

Carpet can be a nightmare when it comes to cleaning. Have you ever gotten gum in a longer Berber carpet? Ever spilled Kool aid on a tan carpet? No one plans on these types of accidents, but they happen, and hardwood offers a much easier cleaning experience.

  1. Strength and durability

High-quality hardwood floors can last for generations. Can anyone say that about carpet or linoleum? Even “wood look” flooring can need to be replaced several times before a hardwood floor needs to be replaced. So while it might be a bit more at the onset as far as overall expense goes, it makes up for it many times over when it comes to replacement cost and the opportunity cost of having your house torn up several times for flooring replacements.

  1. A great long-term investment

Planning on being in your home for more than a few years? Hands down, hardwood is the way to go. Hardwood flooring is a fantastic investment for you to make for your home, and it is something that people look for when buying a new home.

Why NOT having hardwood floors might be causing you SERIOUS problems!

We are often asked about the benefits of hardwood floors over other types of flooring, and we think that the answer to this question can be summed up by looking at three different areas:

1.Safety & Cleanliness

What happens when your carpet is too ragged and dirty to be cleaned? You have to replace it, right? Not the case with hardwood! Hardwood floors can be repaired and resurfaced which gives you a much longer time between having to completely change a rooms flooring. Do you have pets? Allergies from pets? Hardwood is exactly what the doctor ordered for your home! While carpet can hold on to these particulates and dander, hardwood floors do not, and this can do wonders for those out there with extreme allergies.

2. Low Maintenance

Mopping and repairing vs. vacuuming, shampooing and replacing…these differences can mean a huge difference in time and expense on keeping your flooring looking its best. No one wants to spend time keeping their floor looking great, but at the same time no one wants to see their investment lose money either. Having hardwood takes time aways from your

3.Beauty/Resale Value

Sure, there are many kinds of carpet/vinyl floors, but do they each offer the beauty and value that each type of hardwood gives you in your home? You may be looking at carpeting and deciding between a short pile or a woven berber, but these carpets are still made of the same types of materials. When you are making a decision on which type of hardwood to buy, you are looking at oak vs. hickory (or another such example), and this is a much bigger difference! The smells, the look…even the feel of these different woods can be a night and day difference. Oh, and when you are looking at the return you may get off a new floor, it is important to know that most people don’t talk extensibly in their for sale flyer about carpet, but they definitely do talk at great lengths about hardwood floors in a home!

So when it comes to buying a new floor to go in your home, are you looking for immediate gratification and the initial spend you will be putting out to redo your floor, or are you looking at the long term benefit of your floor choice? I have yet to speak to someone and, five years after replacing a floor say to themselves, “MAN I wish I would have spent less money on my new floor.” Keep that in mind as you start making plans for your next new floor!

What is hardwood?

What exactly is hardwood? Many types of floors are referred to as hardwood floors or have the look of hardwood floors, but in reality, they are NOT hardwood floors. Let’s look at some examples:

Unfinished and Factory Finished Wood Flooring

All wood floors must have a finish put on them. This protects the wood itself and gives it a “finished” look. When you purchase unfinished wood flooring, your installer will sand the wood and apply the finish on the job site. If you are looking for a “specific” or “custom” look, this is always your best option.

The other alternative is factory-finished wood flooring. In this option,  the finish is applied at the manufacturing facility. As you might have guessed already, these floors take much less time to install and are ready for daily use much sooner than unfinished floors are.

Solid and Engineered Wood Flooring
Now let’s take a look at the difference between solid and engineered wood floors.

Solid wood flooring is entirely made up of solid wood. The thickness varies from ¾” to 5/16”, and can be installed above or on grade. Solid wood flooring is ideal if you are planning on staying at your location for a while as it can be sanded and refinished.

Engineered wood floors are exactly what they sound like: floors engineered using various layers of different kids of wood and wood veneers (this gives extra strength). These wood floors can be installed above, on or below grade and in some cases can be sanded and refinished, but in others cannot.

So when you are looking at options, just because it says “hardwood” doesn’t mean it is the same as the wood your neighbor has or like you saw on TV! Do a little extra digging and make sure you are getting the RIGHT hardwood for your application!
