Maple is a light, creamy colored hardwood with slight differences in shade from board to board, and depending on the grade chosen, can offer varying degrees of brownish/black mineral streaking. The grain in Maple is light colored, and at times hard to see, ranging from straight uniformed lines to curly patterns. Another possible form of graining that may appear on some boards is "birdseye", a pattern of small marks that look like little eyes. Though it can be found in some other species, Maple hardwood is the most common. With a Janka Hardness Rating of 1450, Maple is generally considered one of the harder domestic species. However, due to it's molecular make up of hard and soft cell structures, going with a dark stain on a site finished floor can sometimes come out blotchy. If a dark Maple floor is what you would like, the best recommendation would be to go with a pre-finished floor.
